Custom Firearms for Shadowrun 4th Edition

Previously I posted a couple of custom pistols made using Shadowrun 3rd Edition rules. This time around I’ve updated them for Shadowrun 4th Edition (using the weapon modification rules in Arsenal).

Arsenal’s rules are more conservative than those in Shadowrun 3rd Edition’s Cannon Companion, probably designed to better maintain game balance compared to Cannon Companion’s over-the-top customization system.

Thus there’s no increased power and the slots available are normally limited to six. Arsenal states that as a soft limit GMs can modify but I stuck to it for the purposes of creating these guns.

There may be some room for interpretation, it could be argued that a custom look shouldn’t take up a slot in some cases, but I adhered to the rules as printed. I also decided that the unique engravings were the mark of a master weaponsmith and part of what made these pistols special, so I kept those options over some more functional choices… but they could be swapped if you’re really looking to squeeze in additional performance.

Finally I took a guess at availability ratings, based on those of the modifications used and other standard weapons listed in SR4.

Thanatos

Thanatos is a custom heavy pistol, based on the Ares Predator IV, representing impeccable quality workmanship by a master weaponsmith. It was created for the consummate professional and is fitted to an individual with a personalized grip, biometric safety, and an engraved reaper and scythe design. It also features a skinlink for no-fuss smartgun integration (smartgun system already included) and reduced hacker interferance, improved range finder, and ceramic and plasteel components to make it undetectable by MAD systems. This rare weapon is expensive and extremely hard to come by; what’s more, anyone not purchasing this new and directly from the weaponsmith will not receive the benefit of the personalized grip (-1 recoil modifier) and will have to modify or circumvent the biometric safety’s setting from that of its previous owner.

While Arsenal’s rules make a distinction between modifications (built-in) and accessories (can be installed by someone without specialized knowledge), it’s not entirely clear to me whether accessories must also fit within the slot limit used by modifications.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that adding a silencer accessory to Thanatos (already built with modifications taking all six slots) is still reasonable, but the rules could be interpreted to disallow it. Check with your GM to see if silenced Thanatos is right for you.

A silencer accessory is recommended for jobs where discretion is needed, but is not included in the price.

The Rake

The Rake is a product of the same master weaponsmith who created Thanatos, but instead of being designed for stealth and power it was created for maximum damage. Based on the Ares Slivergun it uses flechette ammunition only, is burst-fire capable, comes equipped with an internal smartgun system and improved range finder, plus a gas vent 2 system integrated into the barrel to reduce recoil. A skinlink, personalized grip (-1 recoil modifier for the intended owner only), and an engraving featuring a skeleton and sweeping blades motif round out this hard-to-find custom weapon.
