A Few Things I’m Looking Forward to in 2009

There are several more games I need to review and I also would like to write a bit more about reviewing and perhaps change the way I write reviews but it occurred to me that there are a number of game related things I am quite excited about at the moment and this being the last day of the year a post about these items might be a good idea.

I guess I should probably point out that when I say “things” I am specifically referring to game-related things. Perhaps this is obvious but I do sometimes go off on tangents and I do occasionally discuss non-game-related things. For example I could include Watchman in the list of things I am looking forward to in 2009 (though I hear it has been delayed again) but this list is about game-type things and thus I wont. Unless I just did…

So, what follows is a list with brief discussion about some of the game-related items I am looking forward to in the coming year. These items are in no particular order, unless you want to read into the fact that I am putting them in the order that they came to my mind and thus those that popped in first might be of more immediate importance to me. But then, I am rather scattered in the brain department and I would say that you would be best to not make any assumptions.

Dominion Promo Card: Envoy – Yes, I haven’t even put up my review of the game and I am already excited about the promo card that isn’t available yet in America. The card was given out in its German form at a convention (given out or sold, I’m uncertain of which) and is a new kingdom card for the game Dominion. From what it says on BBG the English version of the card will be distributed next year through BBG itself. For those interested, here is a translation of what this card does for its cost of four:

Reveal the top 5 cards of your deck. The player to your left chooses one for you to discard. Draw the rest.

Eclipse Phase – Scott first brought this game to my attention and I have been checking their web site fairly regularly eagerly awaiting more information since. While the percentile-based system makes me slightly nervous I have faith in Rob Boyle and his crew and I enjoyed the Takeshi Kovacs novels quite a bit and thus am looking forward to reading and hopefully playing this new game.

Player’s Handbook 2 – I suppose I am excited about all the D&D books on the horizon but this one sort of sums up that excitement. The other books that will be coming out and expanding on the current classes in the game are welcome but the PH2 adding new classes to the mix of party make ups will allow for more diversity and will prevent the issue of dead wizards i.e. “My wizard died… I guess I’ll play… a wizard…”.

Pandemic ExpansionPandemic is one of the most elegant games I’ve ever played and one of the best (and in some ways the best) cooperative games I’ve ever played. Z-Man has announced that in 2009 we will have an expansion for this simple and brilliant little game. While I am given pause as I have seen other games “Jump the Shark” because of over-expansion I have faith that they will stay true to the original game and I am looking forward to see what they come up with. I haven’t seen too much about the expansion but it is mentioned in the Z-Man newsletter.

Off the top of my head these are the four biggies I guess. I hope that Race for the Galaxy will see an expansion in 2009 and I expect Arkham Horror may see yet another as well. I was excited about the Shadowrun books that were planned for release in 2009 but as I am not currently playing that game I am not considering them a top priority. I am also looking forward to D&DI getting around to having more of the material they touted before 4th Editions release… but I wont be holding my breath.

What games are you excited about for the coming year? Let me know!

I’m a bit late to the party, heh.

Eclipse Phase probably tops my 2009 gaming list. Beyond that it quickly moves to my hopes for finding time to try out each of the dozen-plus old and out-of-print games I was gifted over the holidays 🙂
