Since we started playing BSG The Board Game (and boy have we played it, I would say we have played this game more than any other recently) we have bantered about “the expansion”. Mind you no expansion had been announced but hey, it’s Fantasy Flight there HAS to be an expansion coming.
Well… now it’s official!
You head over to Fantasy Flight and check out the details they have revealed so far but there really isn’t a ton to go on. Apparently the expansion does progress things through the introduction of the Pegasus and allows you to participate in the battle of New Caprica.
The expansion entitles Pegasus boasts “two new supplemental game boards featuring the Battlestar Pegasus and the planet of New Caprica, seven new characters, a new Cylon Locations overlay, two plastic Basestars, as well as new Destination, Crisis, Loyalty, Quorum, Super Crisis, and Skill cards.”
From what has been revealed it sounds as though the expansion will be slightly modular. Modular seems to be the way many game expansions are going these days, a move I fully support. Of course, this means that the game needs to be capable of handling easy adding and subtracting of the different elements. In BSG‘s case, I don’t see it as being a problem but with games like Arkham Horror (technically modular but didn’t really feel that way) separating out elements was more annoying than just dealing with the added weight of the piles of cards and options on the table.
The addition of new characters is a no-brainer. Many fans have already made there own home-brewed characters and some seem fairly interesting and balanced. Additionally, the new destinations seem obvious as currently the only destination is Kobol. I worry slightly about adding new crisis cards, as it could make the deck slightly less balanced (easier for the Cylon attack cards to be bunched at the end for example) but I’ll withhold full judgment until I see how it is implemented.
One of the cards on the site, a Loyalty Card, seems to say “You are a sympathetic Cylon”. It’s unclear what this means but could be interesting.
One slight concern about the expansion is that it will reveal information about the show. The base game has very few actual spoilers and those that it does have are pretty week. Perhaps by the time the expansion comes out it won’t matter much (season 4.5 will be out on DVD and most people that want to see the show will have already) but just going to look at the information on Fantasy Flight’s site will give away a tiny bit of info (well, this post gives away the existence of Pegasus and New Caprica) about one episode.
Overall it looks like they are heading down the path I would have chosen for expanding BSG and this makes me happy. We will certainly have to see how it all comes together but unless things change a lot over the next couple months, I expect our group will be looking forward to getting our hands on this.
