Time for another release of the Ship Builder for Silent Death – now with support for variable speed torpedoes!
Here’s the list of changes in version 1.3:
- Variable speed torpedoes are the default, uncheck if you want uniform speed torps.
- Minor change to the ship design URL protocol, old ship designs still work and should be seamlessly upgraded to the new style; the change is minor, to accommodate the new default option for variable speed torpedoes.
- Also weapon ammo selections are now remembered while the multiple and type change, instead of always reverting to the first option whenever something changed, which should make things a little bit smoother when arrowing through weapons for comparison.
So what’s so special about variable speed torpedoes? Glad you asked! They’re more expensive (at the low end; the mark fives are actually cheaper), which should translate to ships carrying fewer torps – a good thing by my reckoning. The optional rule also changes torpedo speeds, giving smaller, lighter torps a boost while slowing down the heaviest torps.
All of this means that, per point cost, the various sizes of torpedoes are a bit more evenly matched. Previously it seemed to me that there was little reason to buy torpedoes larger than mark one, but now that those cost almost as much as the heavier torpedoes there are actual decisions to be made about the damage/speed trade-offs.
As a bonus celebrating this new release here’s a little ship I designed in honor of all things ammo: the Buzzsaw!
